Apollo - Lotus Sculpture

Marrakesh, Morocco (2014)

Apollo is a monumental 2.5-metre freestanding lotus sculpture commissioned for a private residence and conceived as the central sculptural focal point of the garden. Positioned as a standalone presence within the landscape, the work was designed to operate both as a contemplative object by day and as a luminous landmark by night. As part of the wider Lotus collection, Apollo represents the stainless-steel counterpart to earlier bronze works, extending the language of the lotus into a different material and spatial context.

The sculpture is executed entirely in 8 mm thick stainless steel, with each element hand-sawn from solid sheet, a process that required exceptional time, precision, and physical endurance. Following cutting, the surfaces are further engraved with subtle floral patterns, enriching the material with layered detail. The individual components are then welded together, assembled, and meticulously smoothed and hammered to achieve a continuous, flowing form. Once completed, the sculpture is polished to a mirror-like finish, transforming the dense industrial material into a refined, fluid surface.

During daylight hours, Apollo reflects its surroundings, with the polished stainless steel catching and scattering sunlight so that the form appears to shift as the viewer moves around it. At night, the sculpture is illuminated from a concealed light source positioned above, allowing the engraved patterns to project delicately onto the ground below. This invisible illumination activates the sculpture after dark, creating an ever-changing play of light and shadow. Through its dual presence, reflective by day and luminous by night,  Apollo demonstrates the transformation of stainless steel into an expressive, meditative sculptural medium.
