Cosmic Spiral - 818 Series
(2019)
Cosmic Spiral is one of four bespoke artworks commissioned for the 78-metre Feadship mega yacht Syzygy 818, later renamed Pi, which won Best Yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show 2019 upon its unveiling. Built by Feadship, with exterior design by Jarkko Jämsén and interior architecture by Sinot Yacht Design, the yacht’s owner granted Yahya complete creative freedom to conceive four major artworks for key locations on board. Cosmic Spiral was designed specifically for the upper deck, where it engages directly with light, movement, the horizon and the sky above.
The sculpture is conceived as a meditation on the expansion of the universe, translating cosmic movement into sculptural form. At its centre is a Fibonacci double-helix medallion, hand-sawn from 2-millimetre bronze and backlit, from which a series of radial arms spiral outward. These arms evoke the formation and expansion of galaxies, with motion unfolding from a single point into an ordered yet infinite system. Mathematics, nature, and cosmology converge in a composition that mirrors both celestial structures and natural growth patterns.
Cosmic Spiral is entirely handmade in bronze and is technically one of the most complex works in the yacht series. Each radial arm is constructed from hundreds of finely cut brass strips, individually welded together to form a continuous concave surface that twists outward from the centre. The arms are meticulously hand-pierced with micro-perforations, suggesting stars, galaxies, and cosmic dust. No hammering or mechanical forming is used; instead, curvature is achieved purely through precise assembly, producing a layered surface that captures light and shadow with exceptional refinement.
