FIA WTCR Trophy
Worldwide (2018)
Created for the FIA WTCR World Touring Car Cup in collaboration with Eurosport, this sculptural championship trophy emerged following the international recognition of Yahya’s earlier Race of Morocco trophy design. Developed as part of an international design competition involving some of the world’s most prestigious trophy makers, the commission sought a new visual identity for one of global touring car racing’s highest distinctions. Conceived to travel internationally across the championship calendar, the trophy became closely associated with the visual identity and ceremonial spectacle of the WTCR championship itself.
The trophy was fabricated entirely by hand in nickel silver and conceived as a vertically tapered cylindrical form designed to be both sculptural and highly theatrical when raised in victory. The central body incorporates a complex composition of concentric circular forms layered across multiple depths, creating a dense openwork structure inspired by the textures, mechanical rhythms, and metallic surfaces associated with automotive engineering, tyres, gears, and rotational movement. Rather than directly reproducing mechanical components, the composition abstracts these references into a fluid sculptural language of overlapping circles, reflections, transparency, and depth. The upper section incorporates finely engraved metal surfaces, while the lower section integrates engraved plaques recording the names of championship winners across successive seasons. The underside of the base was finished in leather stamped with Yahya’s signature gold-leaf monogram.
Despite its highly technical inspiration, the final work possesses an unexpected sense of elegance, lightness, and refinement. The perforated cylindrical structure captures and reflects surrounding light while simultaneously revealing shifting layers of transparency through the overlapping concentric compositions. Its elongated proportions and dramatic tapering geometry were carefully developed to create a distinctive silhouette instantly recognisable on podiums, in broadcast imagery, and during championship celebrations around the world. Balancing references to engineering, speed, movement, and craftsmanship, the trophy transformed the language of motorsport awards into a sculptural object of lasting visual identity, establishing itself as one of the most recognisable contemporary trophies within international touring car racing.
