Sirai House
Kenya ( 2010 )
Nestled within lush tropical gardens and perched atop a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, Sirai House is a private family sanctuary on the Kenyan coast, conceived as a retreat where architecture, landscape, and atmosphere exist in quiet balance. Yahya was commissioned to create bespoke lighting, architectural elements, and decorative works that would enhance the relationship between the built spaces and their natural surroundings, shaping an environment defined by calm, refinement, and understated luxury.
Conceived as a deeply private coastal retreat, Sirai House is set within expansive tropical gardens overlooking the vast horizon of the Indian Ocean. The architecture is designed to embrace natural airflow, filtered light, and a continuous dialogue with the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the cultural richness and relaxed rhythm of the Kenyan coast, the property balances openness and intimacy, creating a sanctuary where interior and exterior spaces flow effortlessly into one another.
Yahya was invited to design a series of bespoke lighting installations, architectural screens, candle holders, and decorative elements throughout the house. Each piece was conceived specifically for its location, responding to scale, materiality, and the changing qualities of daylight and dusk. By day, the works remain discreet, integrated into the architecture and garden setting; by night, they come alive through carefully controlled illumination, revealing texture, depth, and atmosphere through light and shadow.
The intervention draws on ancestral craftsmanship while remaining attuned to the spirit of its setting, blending intricate metalwork with natural materials and warm, ambient light. Rather than imposing a visual signature, the work enhances the experience of place, reinforcing a sense of calm, continuity, and immersion. Sirai House stands today as a refined private sanctuary, where design, craftsmanship, and landscape are brought into harmonious alignment.
