Floral Lotus

Floral Lotus

(2017)

Floral Lotus is a monumental 2.5-metre freestanding sculpture commissioned as the central artwork for the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel Gammarth in Tunis. Conceived as the visual and spatial anchor upon entry, the sculpture was developed with complete creative freedom to occupy the centre of the lobby as a singular presence. Positioned beneath a domed ceiling and isolated from surrounding elements, the work establishes immediate focus, giving the sculpture architectural importance and allowing it to define the atmosphere of the space.

The sculpture takes the form of a fully realised lotus, executed entirely in bronze. Each element is hand-sawn from sheet metal, engraved with delicate floral detailing, and then welded together to form a continuous surface. The assembled structure is subsequently hammered and refined to achieve a smooth, uniform volume, while preserving the richness of the engraved surface beneath. The result is a sculpture that balances intricate surface detail with a calm, monumental form, combining ornamental complexity with sculptural restraint.

The work is illuminated from a concealed overhead light source, carefully integrated so that the origin of the light remains invisible. This lighting projects the engraved patterns onto the floor below, creating a 360-degree field of shadow and reflection around the sculpture. As guests enter the lobby, the projected patterns activate the surrounding space, encouraging close observation and curiosity as viewers attempt to understand how the piece is lit. Through this interplay of form, light, and shadow, Floral Lotus transforms the act of arrival into a contemplative and immersive experience.
